What Electrical Contractors Do in New Construction

A Simple Overview for Customers

When a new building is under construction, electrical contractors are responsible for installing everything that powers and connects the space — from outlets and lighting to cameras and network wiring. Here’s a clear breakdown of what we do from start to finish:

  • 1. Pre-Construction & Coordination

    • Plan Review: We carefully study the electrical drawings provided by the architect or engineer to understand where panels, wiring, and lighting will go.
    • Permitting: Depending on the project, we either handle electrical permits ourselves or coordinate with the general contractor to pull them.
    • Jobsite Prep: We set up temporary power (if needed) and coordinate with other trades to avoid conflicts before we start our install.
  • 2. Installation Phase

    • Service & Panel Install: We install the main electrical service panel and distribute power safely throughout the building.
    • Rough-In Wiring: Before the walls are closed up, we run all the electrical wiring for outlets, lights, HVAC units, data, security, and speaker systems.
    • Conduit & Boxes: We install electrical boxes and conduit where needed to make sure the wiring is protected and up to code.
  • 3. Trim-Out & Final Connections

    • Lighting Fixtures: Once drywall is done, we install the light fixtures, switches, and outlet covers.
    • Low-Voltage Systems: We wire and install security cameras, speaker systems, and data/network wiring.
    • Testing: We fully test all systems — making sure everything works safely and exactly as planned.
  • 4. Inspections & Final Steps

    • Code Compliance: We schedule inspections with the city (if required) and ensure the entire system passes with no issues.
    • Final Walkthrough: We walk through the job with the GC or client to make sure everything is complete, clean, and labeled.
